On a 43 0 km round-trip with three passengers aboard, the Mirage impressed with ample front and rear legroom, a smooth ride, easy steering, and a tight U-turn radius. What of those kilometres’ quality, then? The Mirage may be spartan, but it’s nimble in town, planted on the highway, and plenty comfortable. Even with A/C blowing cold, my ~ 1,0 00 km behind their wheels showed those figures to be accurate. Better still, the CVT boasts Canada’s best non-hybrid fuel economy with figures of 6.6, 5.6, 6.2 respectively. On paper, the manual gets 7.1 L per hundred km city, 5.8 highway, and 6.5 mixed. I drove the three-pedal car like a three-pedal thrill seeker, and the CVT like I had a trunk loaded with eggs. I drove two Mirages for this review: a base-trim ES with 5-speed manual transmission ($1 3, 858 before tax and delivery), and a fancier ( $1 7, 158 ) SE with the more efficient CVT. The GT is a larger leap at $20,150, but modernizes the Mirage with lane-keep assist, front collision avoidance, LED headlights with automatic high-beams, heated seats and steering wheel, and larger 15” wheels. You can option an automatic continuously-variable transmission on the base, but most buyers will just buy the $17,158 Mirage ES, which comes standard with said CVT, driver’s armrest, power locks and rear windows, alloy wheels, and a larger infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. (And for what it’s worth, I think it looks fine.) It’s an unusual – indeed, bold – angle to take in this era of angry grilles and conspicuous consumption. According to Mitsubishi market research, Mirage buyers identify fuel economy, ‘value for money,’ and warranty coverage as key reasons for their purchase moreover, they point to a pattern of apparent disinterest in speed, looks, or others’ opinions. And perhaps most importantly, t he allure of initial affordability is augmented by the reassurance of Mitsubishi’s unmatched 10-year, 160,000 km powertrain and 5-year, 100,000 km basic warranties.Ģ021 Mitsubishi Mirage SE (CVT) Photo by Elliot Alder Averaging 6.5 L/100 km in the most common configuration, this is a subcompact that encroaches on hybrid territory without the added cost or complexity. This is an inexpensive new car that does all of the car things we expect of modern motors, and without the anxiety of buying used. In a market dominated by Jones es -chasing luxury pickups and SUVs, the unpretentious Mirage stands out as a uniquely pragmatic buy.
